Explore Sustainability in Berlin

Discover how cities can become living laboratories for sustainability on this immersive 7-day program in Berlin.

Through field visits, workshops, urban exploration and challenge-based learning, participants examine how circular economy, energy, transportation, public space and community action connect within the transition towards more sustainable and resilient cities.

Discover Berlin as a living urban laboratory

Berlin provides a powerful environment for exploring how sustainability is influenced by infrastructure, behaviour, innovation and the communities that shape a city.

Participants experience the city through activities such as urban cycling, sustainable city exploration and visits to circular economy initiatives, examining how mobility, materials, public spaces and resource use influence everyday urban life.

These experiences help students understand sustainability not as a single solution, but as a connected system of environmental, social and economic decisions.

Explore community and systems transformation

Sustainable cities depend not only on technology and infrastructure, but also on the people and communities within them.

Through academic exchange and community-led initiatives, participants explore urban food systems, biodiversity, local participation and grassroots approaches to climate action.

Experiences with organisations and initiatives such as Freie Universität Berlin, Circular Berlin and Allmende-Kontor demonstrate how universities, communities and organisations can contribute to more inclusive and sustainable cities.

Understand energy, mobility and the future of cities

The program explores two systems central to urban decarbonisation: energy and transportation.

Participants examine Germany's energy transition and climate thinking alongside sustainable transport solutions ranging from regional rail to shared urban mobility.

Visits and workshops with organisations such as Agora Energiewende, Deutsche Bahn and Nextbike help students understand how policy, infrastructure, technology and individual behaviour interact in the transition towards lower-carbon cities.

The program concludes by exploring future urban development through circular construction, material reuse and innovation-focused environments such as CRCLR House and EUREF Campus.

By the end of the program, participants leave with a stronger understanding of urban sustainability and the systems-level thinking needed to build more resilient, inclusive and low-carbon cities.
